How to Rediscover the Fun in Daily Tasks

Life is full of so many distractions. There seem to be an infinite number of things you’d rather be doing than the little daily tasks and chores that often feel like a slog. By taking steps to make even the drollest tasks more fun (or at least more useful) you can get more value out of your time and start enjoying yourself more.

Make It a Dance Party

If you don’t like doing the dishes, walking the dog, or mowing the lawn, consider how music can help make it more fun. Keep your feet moving while you’re busy with your hands as well to help pass the time faster.

…Or Just Find Something More Fun for Your Mind to Focus On

On the other hand, you can use this time to learn something new by listening to a podcast about your favorite subject. Or you can use quiet moments to connect with yourself and look inward.

The goal is just to find something else for your mind to do. By creating a habit that allows you to connect your chore with something you enjoy more, you’ll start feeling more positively about that task in general.

Do Them With Other People

Make everything more fun when you do it with the person you love! Tag-team the dishes and laugh with one another to make basic chores a good bonding experience.

Or, say if you walk your dog around the park, try to find a friend group of other people that have to walk their dog as well to make it a social exercise. Buddy up with your bestie to stay motivated to go to the gym every day. In fact, adding other people into your health routine can help you keep up your dedication! Plus, you’ll have someone to celebrate with when you guys hit major milestones.

Make It Special

Make something you don’t like to do, like getting out of bed or car maintenance, special by treating yourself. If Monday is the hardest day of the week for you, set up a special surprise that makes you excited to get up in the morning.

Or do the task for someone else. Wake up and make coffee for your loved one or family. They will be appreciative of you, you get to have something you love, and doing something nice for others will make you feel good.

Be Mindful About Your Language

Often, we influence our moods without even realizing it by fueling our minds with expectations that become self-fulfilling prophecies. Phrase things out loud or in your mind in a way that makes this daily task feel more worthwhile instead of like a chore. Then use the other tactics on this list to make it feel more fun.

Soon enough, you’ll start looking forward to doing tasks you used to dread.

Enjoy Your Life—Even the Mundane Parts

Every second of life is a gift—unique, full of contradictions, and utterly strange in all the ways being alive is. By taking time to be appreciative and find bits of joy even in tasks you may not look forward to doing every day, you can find the little bits of hidden joy in life you didn’t know were there before.

Plus, at the very least, it can help make chores a little more fun!
