3 Ways to Keep Moving in Marriage BY Justin Lewis, LMFT

Einstein once said, “Life is like riding a bicycle. To keep your balance you must keep moving.”

The part of life I’d like to focus on in this post is marriage. In our romantic relationships, unless we are constantly adjusting to life and making necessary changes, we will fall. So, what does moving forward mean? Here are three simple ways to keep your marriage moving so you keep your balance and do not fall.

 Greet each other.

We are busy people and our schedules don’t always align but an easy time to give each other a moment to express how important your spouse is to you is before you leave the house and when you get home. A kiss or hug and “have a good day” or “glad to see you” can keep forward motion in the relationship.

Study your spouse.

Just as our devices have updates so do our interests and personalities. This is not inherently bad, it is a fact of life. Who you are now is not who you were 10 years ago. This requires consistently talking and listening. Maybe even learning facts about new interests on your own. Do not let the changes occur without each person being along for the ride.

Surprise one another.

This is another proactive behavior. Life can get monotonous and without intentional action...or moving...we can as has already been stated, lose our balance and fall over. Finding ways to surprise your spouse is a way to keep your marriage interesting and exercises your creative side.

One additional way to keep moving in marriage is to participate in marriage counseling with a trained professional.
