4 Ways to Make Sure You Are Making Everyday Count

Recently I was listening to one of the most successful people who has ever lived. This person has changed the way the world functions. Not only has he done this with his own genius and hard work but by his ability to manage business and other people.

In this interview, Microsoft founder Bill Gates was talking about the approach he used many years ago while he was building his company. Those methods have drawn mixed reviews over time but one thing he said stood out to me.

“Everyday counts.”

This was the message he took on and also one he communicated to his employees. Gates said he would tell his engineers they are at Microsoft for a reason, implying their intelligence and ability has landed them at such a successful spot, so make the most of it.

Not all of us find ourselves at one of the most recognizable organizations in the world. But, still, everyday counts and there are concrete ways to be certain we are giving everyday due effort.

So here are 4 ways to make sure for you, “everyday counts.”

  1. Make a list.

This is simple. However, it is a way to put on paper and in front of us exactly what things are going to “count” on that day. Sure, some tasks will be more important than others. But it gives us direction to be certain we are doing something  to make that day important. It gives us guidance to make sure we finish some task everyday.

  2. Ask ourselves questions.

We need to be continually asking ourselves and honestly assessing if we are giving every task, assignment, and meeting the effort it deserves. If not, what needs to change in order to be able to put in honest work.

  3. Connect with people.

Human beings are meant to be in community. Each and everyday we need to add value to someone else. For married folks there needs to be a daily check in (at least) on how things have gone for them that day. Also, maintaining friendships is important. So many ways to connect with people these days gives easy availability to make contact.

  4. Learn something new.

Lifelong learning is vital to success in work life and personal life. For us to keep growing we have to gain new information. Making this a part of our daily routine makes our time useful. So whether you are a reader, podcast listener, or TED talk watcher make sure you are finding some way to learn everyday.

These are just a few suggestions. It’s truly up to us to find what works best for you to make everyday count.
